MINISTER for Disabilities Finian McGrath officially opened a new Dialysis Therapy Centre at Beaumont Hospital recently.

The new centre has increased capacity in the outpatient haemodialysis unit from 20 to 34 stations.

This has allowed Beaumont to eliminate early morning and late night dialysis sessions, ensuring that patients are now dialysed during more social hours – between 7am to 11pm – improving their and their family’s quality of life and wellbeing.

Minister McGrath said he was delighted to officially open the centre.

“The centre is a welcome expansion of the Renal Services provided by the Beaumont Hospital Kidney Centre and I am sure it will have a real impact for patients,” he said.

“The new centre, which is part of a programme of expansion which I am progressing at the hospital, was developed with a focus on patient comfort, safety and privacy and the increased capacity in the centre will mean patients will no longer have to travel for dialysis treatment during the night.

“I would like to thank all of the staff who have worked hard to develop such a valuable service which will benefit patients and their families.”

Chief executive of Beaumont Hospital, Ian Carter, said: “Beaumont Hospital is the largest and busiest Renal Unit of its kind in the Republic of Ireland. The facility provides for maintenance, acute, isolation dialysis treatments as well home therapy treatments to patients from all over the country.

The increasing demand for renal services is driven by Ireland’s increasingly ageing population, combined with the high numbers of people with diabetes and high blood pressure. The new centre will assist us to respond to this increased demand.”
