Stardust meeting for families and victims

A MEETING will be held in the Skylon Hotel, Drumcondra, this Wednesday (May 24), at 11am, for anyone directly affected by the 1981 Stardust fire.

Relatives and victims will be given the opportunity to discuss their participation in an upcoming television documentary about the Stardust tragedy.

So far, 2017 has been an eventful year for Stardust campaigners, with a review of possible new evidence currently underway.

Earlier this year, there was considerable political pressure on the Government to sanction a Commission of Inquiry into the fire, which claimed 48 young lives and injured over 200.

In January, a motion calling for an inquiry was tabled by Independent TD, Tommy Broughan, which had the support of Disability Minister Finian McGrath who had called for a free vote on the issue.

As a compromise, the Government put forward its own motion agreeing to an examination of any new evidence by an independent person who was agreeable to the Stardust families. The purpose of the review is to establish if there are grounds for a full Commission of Inquiry into the tragedy.

After the Government’s motion was passed, the highly respected retired judge and former TD, Pat McCartan, was chosen to conduct the review.
