Government clampdown on ‘dangerous’ gulls in Balbriggan

THE Government has responded to concerns raised in Balbriggan about an increase in “dangerous” gulls in the North County Dublin town.

Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) today welcomed confirmation from Minister Heather Humphreys that action will be taken to address the problem following reports of numerous seagull “attacks” in the area.

“The increase in the number of gulls in Balbriggan has become an issue of concern for many local residents,” Deputy Farrell said. “Following the closure of the nearby landfill site, the number of gulls in Balbriggan has greatly increased as these birds are now scavenging for food in the town, in local parks, estates and at local schools.”

He added: “This, I believe, creates a public health risk for the local community and can bring about dangerous situations, particularly where children are involved.

“As a result of this, and following the hard work of a number of local residents, I am glad that the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs will now take action to address the worries of local residents.”

Mr Farrell explained that the minister signed an instrument this week to allow for the removal of gulls’ nests and eggs in Balbriggan from May 1. It is understood that Fingal County Council will carry out the necessary work.
