THERE was great excitement in Darndale Park recently when approximately 400 children attended a tree planting ceremony.

In June 2016, under a Local Government initiative, the Darndale Gateway scheme was introduced and since then, huge strides have been made towards reclaiming the park for residents of the area.

Madeleine Ebbs, from Dublin City Council’s Community Development section, who is involved in the project, said: “For the first time in years, we have had virtually no dumping and little or no anti-social behaviour in the park.

“To continue with this positive progress, we held a tree planting ceremony and it proved to be a very successful event.

“Hopefully this initiative will play a part in educating the children about the importance of trees to the environment.”

The project was a joint venture between the Community Development section and the Parks Department of Dublin City Council. A total of 32 trees were planted.

Local councillor Alison Gilliland (Lab) attended the event, deputising for Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Brendan Carr, while Father Ned from the local Parish blessed the trees.
