ARTANE senior citizens celebrated St Brigid’s Day (February 1) by making woven crosses to give to local residents.

The crosses were made to celebrate the holiday by members of the Artane Men’s Shed, a group of 20 men who meet weekly.

Previously given to people to prevent fire and flooding in their new homes, the Artane men resurrected this tradition by giving the crosses out to their neighbours in the area.

Speaking about the Men’s Shed’s latest project, member Nicky McLaughlin spoke about the group and their various activities. “We started with a small number in October but now it has extended to a full house of 20 people,” McLaughlin said.

“These are 20 men who are all retired. The aim is to get people together to sit down, have a chat and do some projects.”

The group go on walks together weekly and regular outings to places such as the GPO and various museums in the city centre. According to McLaughlin, the group has given a new social outlet to men  who may not have previously had one before.

“Some of these people don’t meet anyone. So rather than looking out the window or looking at the bus pass every half hour, this is somewhere to go with someone to talk to,” he added.
