Local schools triumph in basketball finals at NBA

ST AIDAN’S CBS defeated Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig, in a thrilling Under 19A Boys’ decider at the SUBWAY Schools Cup finals in the National Basketball Arena (NBA).

The Whitehall school successfully defended their title by defeating their Cork opponents 74-62.
St Aidan’s did it in style too, coming back from a 14-point deficit to win by 12 in the end with a fantastic showcase of skill and talent.
Brian Ashton, one of the team’s many stars, was the driving force behind their third quarter comeback, with the extremely talented Matt Treacy on side to help net some vital scores. Conor O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Sullivan and Dylan Corkery also produced very good displays.
Holy Faith Clontarf were also among the Northside winners in an action-packed week of top class basketball at the Tallaght venue.
In the Under 19 A Girls’ final, the Clontarf girls defeated Dunshaughlin Community College comprehensively on a 75-46 scoreline.
After a close and tense first quarter, Jerome Westbrooks’ charges took complete control of the game, closing down an in-form Rachel Huijsdens of Dunshaughlin to outscore them by 26 points in the second quarter which effectively won them the game.
There were superb displays from Ali Connolly, Mae Creane, Bronagh Power Cassidy and Maeve O’ Seaghdha.
