Scout is rewarded for heroically saving a drowning boy
Dublin People 14 Oct 2016
MAYOR of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler made a special presentation to a Northside teen last week for her part in the rescue of a drowning boy while on holiday in Turkey this summer.
Mollie Tamara Powell (16), a member of 38th Dublin Rush Scouts, together with Sean Thompson, from Wexford, a member of the 6th Wexford Sea Scouts, dived 20 feet into the Dim Cay River in Mahmutlar, when they saw a local boy sinking in the water. They swam to his aid, pulled him from the water and had cleared his airways in preparation for CPR when a nurse took over. The boy was taken to hospital and has since recovered.
At the October monthly meeting of the Fingal County Council, Mollie and her family, together with members of the 38th Dublin Rush Scouts, gathered in the Council Chamber in Swords to hear the Mayor and other councillors praise her heroic actions. They observed that her training as a scout had proved extremely beneficial in this instance.
Dave Clarke, from the 38th Dublin Rush Scouts, thanked the Mayor and Fingal county councillors for honouring Mollie. Mr Clarke said Mollie was a credit to scouting for the manner in which she dealt with the situation. He presented the Mayor with a scouts’ neckerchief on behalf of the 38th Dublin Rush Scouts.
