Five things we love about Skerries
Dublin People 05 Oct 2016
Skerries is celebrating after being named Ireland’s Tidiest Town. But there are even more reasons to fall in love with this special North Dublin coastal village. Here are just five of them.

1. A stunning coastal location
To the east, Skerries has lovely island views; to the north you can see as far the Mourne Mountains. It doesn’t get much better than this.
2. Great choice of pubs
You are simply spoilt rotten. Our personal favourite is Joe May’s along the harbour, followed closely by The Snug or The Malting House. Younger punters will prefer the lively atmosphere of Ollie’s Place or Raff’s on the Corner. And the Gladstone is where real locals will rave about the best pint of Guinness in Skerries. There’s only one way to find out…
3. The food
Skerries has become a haven for foodies in recent years. From the award-winning Olive (as visited recently by a certain Mr Mel Gibson) to the popular gastro pub, Stoop Your Head, all tastes are catered for. We also have to give a shout out to the hugely popular Red Bank, The Blue Bar, The Salty Dog, Raff’s on the Corner, The Brick House and the Rockabill. And for a really decent cup of coffee, Seasons gets our vote.
4. Sports facilities
Skerries is a hub of activity, seven days a week. If you love sport, then this is the town for you with hockey, rugby, tennis, cricket, golf, soccer, Gaelic, sailing and watersports just some of the activities on offer. Skerries Community Centre has excellent facilities, including a gym and a large sports hall, as well as outdoor all-weather pitches. It’s just a pity the town doesn’t have its own swimming pool.
5. Its festivals
From Soundwaves to traditional music festivals, there always seems to be something happening in Skerries. And as those who attended the finish of the An Post Rás this year will attest, this town certainly knows how to throw a great street party!
