A NORTHSIDE fishmonger is getting behind a campaign that is urging people to cook Irish mussels.

Speaking at the launch of Bord Bia’s ‘Flex your Mussels’, Martin McLoughlin of Nicky’s Plaice in Howth, said the campaign is extremely important for the shellfish industry in Ireland.

“We have access to some of the freshest shellfish in the world and it is fantastic that we are shouting loud and proud about what is available on our doorstep, or should I say shoreline,” he said.

“To ensure freshness, check all shells are closed – if not, simply gently tap the shell and it should reclose – if it doesn’t, these should not be used.”

Naturally low in fat and a source of quality protein, mussels provide several vitamins and minerals including iron, zinc, selenium, iodine, some B group vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids.

New survey results announced by Bord Bia show a strong national appreciation for Irish mussels, with a huge majority (94 per cent) revealing they like to eat mussels.

Teresa Brophy, Consumer and Trade Marketing Manager at Bord Bia, said: “This campaign is part of a three-year strategy by Bord Bia to highlight the great variety of Irish shellfish available to Irish consumers.

“We are already seeing a growing demand in interest from consumers in eating shellfish at home.”
