35 things you’ll remember if you grew up in Skerries

DID you grow up in Skerries? Here are 35 things you might remember from your childhood.

1. Spending all your pocket money in Bob’s Casino.

2. Going to discos in the community centre. And dreading the slow set.

3. Going to discos in Skerries Rugby Club. And dreading the slow set.

4. Going to the disco in Rush GAA complex… and getting in a fight because you were from Skerries.

5. Watching bands like Sweet Revenge and the Pink Hurts.

6. Having a few cans in ‘the Ballyer’ (The Ballast Pit).

7. Swimming at the Captain’s.

8. Sunbathing in the Ovens on the South Strand.

9. Fishing for crabs off the fishing boats in the harbour.

10. Vaguely remembering the entertainment and holiday complex on Red Island.

11. Being proud of the story of how we stole St Patrick’s Goat… and how he punished Skerries people by making them bleat like goats

12. Caddying in Skerries Golf Club as a summer job.

13. First pints in Joe May’s or Stoop Your Head.

14. Bunking on the train (a real old diesel engine) into town.

15. The embarrassing St Patrick’s Day parades.

16. Snogging the mot at the Martello Tower on Red Island.

17. Brother Philbert, the principal of Holy Faith De La Salle College.

18. Going to a school in a prefab at St Patrick’s National School.

19. Hanging out at ‘the Shelters’ on the North Strand.

20. Getting sausages and chips with a voucher at the disco in the Holmpatrick Hotel.

21. Cycling out to Ardgillan and crossing over the haunted Lady’s Bridge.

22. Going to the cinema in the former Pavilions Ballroom.

23. Going for a swim in the Pavilions.

24. Playing snooker in the Pavilions.

25. And the roller disco.

26. Walking out and getting nearly stranded on Shenick Island.

27. Legging it for the last 33 bus at 11.15pm on Eden Quay after a Saturday night in town.

28. Being astounded by people ‘from Dublin’ asking you to boil water for them (if you lived on the South Strand).

29. Being equally astounded that some of them stayed in caravans – for months!

30. The little lanes of Skerries with their mesmerising names (Beau Piers Lane).

31. Not appreciating that you lived by the sea… until you left.

32. The weekly trip to Carnegie Library.

33. Queuing for chips at the hatch on South Strand.

34. Finally looking old enough to get into Shenanigans.

35. Falling asleep on the last train home – and ending up in Drogheda!
