Major boost for Balbriggan Rugby Club announced

BALBRIGGAN Rugby Club is to receive an additional €500,000 from the Sports Capital Fund to develop their facilities.

Local councillor Tony Murphy (Ind) welcomed the news.

“I was delighted to be able to create an opportunity for Balbriggan Rugby Club to meet with Fingal County Council officials which helped to deliver substantial funding and has allowed the club to proceed with the planning permission for their new clubhouse facility,” said Cllr Murphy.

“In addition to offering the community this fantastic sports facility, the club will now be able to attract overseas teams to visit the area leading to an economic benefit for local businesses.

“The importance of quality sports facilities in a fast growing town like Balbriggan cannot be overstated and this is long overdue.”

Cllr Murphy added: “I would like to compliment the absolute Trojan work carried out to date by Balbriggan RFC President David McFadden, Gerry Hennigan and Robert Cashell.”

Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) also welcomed the news.

“I am delighted with confirmation that €500,000 has been allocated to Balbriggan Rugby Club which will provide for a new clubhouse,” said Deputy Farrell. “Such investment in our local sports clubs is of the utmost importance in terms of providing the facilities to encourage more people to become physically active, particularly our younger generations. This is essential as we fight against increasing levels of obesity.

“Investing in sporting facilitates in our local community, and getting more people exercising and participating in sport on a more regular basis is fundamental in terms of a public health approach to tackle obesity, and to reduce the strain on our health service from conditions associated with, and exacerbated by, physical inactivity.”
