SWORDS has been chosen to participate in Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Competition for 2016 under the Large Urban Centre category.

Swords was chosen following its excellent performance in last year’s Tidy Towns competition.

The Best Kept Town Competition is an all island initiative organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council.

Participation is based on a town’s performance in Tidy Towns, and features four awards: Best Village, Best Small Town, best Large Town and Best Large Urban Centre.

Fingal County Council said it is delighted with the news.

Chief executive of the council Paul Reid said: “The Tidy Towns competition has continued to play an important part in enhancing the local authority’s relationship with residents and businesses of the county.

“The new nomination to participate in the Best Kept Towns Award gives recognition to the hard work of all involved in making Swords a great place to live or visit.”

Swords also recently celebrated a Purple Flag Award. This is the highest internationally recognised award for the  evening and nighttime economy in Europe. Towns awarded the flag are recognised for providing a vibrant mix of entertainment while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and locals.
