Public invited to 1916 Rising City Hall event

THE North Inner City 1916 Commemorations Committee have been busy organising 1916 related events over the past few months.

This Saturday, February 20, at City Hall the committee is holding a major event which includes an Irish Volunteers Group Exhibition, Memorabilia Assessment, Photographic Exhibition and advice on how to find out if your relatives were involved in the Rising.

The event, which will run from 11am to 4pm, will include a 1916 talk on the hour.

Hugo McGuinness and Liz Gillis will present talks about ‘City Hall and the Rising’, and ‘Women of the Revolution’ respectively; local councillor Nial Ring (Ind), and author of the best selling book, ‘The GPO Garrison – Easter Week 1916’, Jimmy Wren’, will discuss events at the GPO; and Mick O’Farrell will give a fascinating talk on the lesser known facts and incidents of the Rising.

Chair of the North Inner City 1916 Commemorations Committee Nial Ring said this will be a major contribution by the north inner city to the 1916 calendar of events.

“The event is our way of paying tribute to those from the north inner city who took part in the Rising,” said Mr Ring.

“But it is also our contribution to the public who are interested in the Rising, and that’s why we have organised such a full and interesting day and everyone is welcome to drop in – admission is free.

“One of our committee members, Derek Jones, will be there to assess any memorabilia from the period and our exhibition of weapons and uniforms should be of great interest to the public.”

Mr Ring added: “Our talks will be given by expert historians and the attendees should go home with a lot more information about and appreciation of the events of that fateful week in 1916.”
