A FOOTBALL initiative set up for adults who access mental health services on the Northside is proving popular in the local community.

In October 2015, HSE employees Carol Cassidy, an occupational therapist working in Dublin North Mental Health Services (Rehabilitation), and Shane Manton, a clinical nurse specialist, established the team.

Every Thursday afternoon for an hour, 10 players gather to play 5-a-side soccer at Kilmore Recreation Centre, a Dublin City Council-owned premises.

Ms Cassidy said it’s a great outlet for the players who wouldn’t normally have much of an opportunity to socialise.

“The lads love the football,” she said.

“It has a positive impact on both their mental and physical health.

“This is a first of a kind and is a partnership between ourselves and Dublin City Council.  “We have been fortunate to receive funding for new kits for all members.”

Ms Cassidy believes the initiative is one that could grow in the future.
