A NORTHSIDE teenager is hoping to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio this year.

Aoife Hopkins (17), from Howth, who was the youngest competitor in the Sailing World Cup in Weymouth last year, had originally hoped to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Toyko. However, she has been doing so well that she might make it to the Rio Olympics this summer.

In order to qualify for Rio, Aoife needs to finish in the top 40 in a number of major sailing events.

She recently came 28th in the Copa de Brasil, racing against very experienced adult sailors including Olympic medalists. Her next competition is in Miami.

Unfortunately, Aoife needs to fund her participation in these events herself at a cost of at least €20,000. Senator Averil Power, who will be contesting the Dublin Bay North constituency in the general election as an Independent candidate, is supporting Aoife’s fundraising efforts and is calling on local businesses to consider sponsoring her.

“Aoife is an extraordinary young woman with an incredibly promising sailing career ahead of her,” said Senator Power.

“At just 17-years-of-age, she represents ones of Ireland’s best hopes of international sporting success.

“It would be a huge shame if she didn’t get to the Rio Olympics just because of the prohibitive cost of competing in the qualifying events.”

Senator Power is encouraging local businesses to sponsor Aoife and help make her Olympic dream become a reality.

“Any business or individual who is interested in doing so can contact Aoife through Howth Yacht Club,” she added.
