A NORTHSIDE senior citizens’ centre has announced plans to expand its service.

Since officially opening its doors in 2014, Golden Years, based at Darndale Belcamp Village Centre, has provided an important outlet for the elderly in the community.

There are currently 651 members registered with its services while 112 people attend full day-care on a weekly basis.

Golden Years is now in a position where it needs to refurbish the building to further meet the requirements of its ever-increasing membership.

Nicko Murphy, PRO for the Darndale Belcamp Village Centre, said: “Our plan for expansion will allow us to increase our day-care members by an additional 100 places per week, while continuing to provide much needed services to older people living within our community and surrounding areas.

“Golden Years provides much more than just day-care. We believe our centre belongs to our members, and it is a place where they can socialise and feel at home in a warm, friendly and inclusive atmosphere.

“We strive to constantly improve our services and believe that this expansion of the service will enable us to offer much more to our older people.”

Golden Years also offers a range of activities, social events, clubs, classes and a drop-in service for members.

Also, an outreach team provides home visits to some members who may be sick or housebound while its care and repair service offers free home maintenance to members living locally. Mr Murphy added: “We would like to thank the HSE for funding us with €25,000 to carry out the work necessary to allow us to expand our services. It means so much to us to have their support and belief in what we do.”
