A CHARITY that supports older people to age at home has launched its first annual 5km Christmas Cracker which will take place on December 27 at 12noon in Santry.

The ALONE 5km road race is organised in partnership with Clonliffe Harriers Athletics Club, based in Santry, and is supported by the European Recycling Platform (ERP).

The family friendly fun run is open to everyone – from serious runners to costume wearing walkers and everyone in between.

The race will begin and end in Morton Stadium with the route encompassing Northwood and Santry Avenue.

Sean Moynihan, chief executive of ALONE, said they were thrilled to be partnering with thClonliffe Harriers Athletic Club for the first ALONE Christmas Cracker run.

“We hope that lots of people will join us for a fun morning out to shake off the post-Christmas slump and support older people in need,” said Mr Moynihan.

“We’ll have spot prizes, refreshments and a few surprises to help get you moving!”

Catherina McKiernan, four-time World Cross Country medallist and event ambassador, said: “The ALONE Christmas Cracker run is a great opportunity to get out with your family, enjoy some fresh air and help a good cause at the same time.

“We all like to do that extra bit for charity around Christmastime and I think this is a lovely way to support the older people that ALONE work with.

“I can see this becoming an annual tradition for many families.”  Registration costs €20 and is now open through www.alone.ie and €5 from every registration goes directly to ALONE to support their work with older people in need. Everyone who registers will receive a goody bag, and the first 500 to attend on the day will receive a special Christmas Cracker t-shirt.
