Nearly 2500 disabled children on waiting lists in North Dublin

Labour councillor Declan Meenagh has condemned the Government over the number of children awaiting assessments of needs, following revelations from a recent parliamentary question.

Meenagh, who is a councillor for Cabra-Glasnevin, said “as a disabled public representative with experience of being denied services, It is devastating to learn that 2476 children are waiting for their assessment of needs to be completed in CHO 9,” which covers the Northside.

“This is not just a number – these are real children with real families here in Cabra/Glasnevin who are left in limbo. Assessments of needs are critical for families to properly plan for health and educational supports, and the current delays are simply unacceptable.”

“Children in Cabra/Glasnevin and throughout the nation should not be left lingering on waiting lists. This is deeply concerning and highlights a significant failure on the part of the Government. The lack of adequate planning and resources is evident, and it is the families who suffer the consequences.

He said that Labour would build a system that “works for children, families, teachers and communities.”

“All children deserve a fair start and a health and education system that supports and uplifts them,” he said.

“The Disability Act is very clear – the responsibility to carry out an assessment of children’s needs lies with the HSE. We need renewed political urgency to tackle these waiting lists. The families of Cabra/Glasnevin and across the country cannot wait any longer. Government must act now to ensure every child receives the support they need and deserve.”
