Mixed birthday wishes for Dublin’s Spire
Dublin People 02 Mar 2013THE Spire on O’Connell Street has just celebrated its 10th birthday. Does it continue to divide Dublin opinion or have we finally come to terms with its presence? Here’s a selection of comments on the subject from followers of the Dublin People Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Dublinpeople)

Laura Tormey: At this stage it wouldn’t be the same without it.
Sheelagh Puryer: I like it.
Vikki Behan: It was a waste of money. Money should have been put into hospitals instead of stopping mobility allowance and taking from hospitals.
Terry Brophy: Apart from the silly light about half way up, which wasn’t part of the original design, I love it.
Emmet Kavanagh: The money could have been spent on better things like the homeless
?¦
Amy Finnegan: Stupid looking thing!
John Parrott: What is it supposed to be?
Dave O’Looney: I think it’s great. It brings people together to have a good moan about something.
Lisa Byrne: Ah, it’s nice. It puts us on the map. If they didn’t waste money on that it would have been on something else.
Kathy Malone: It’s a great place to meet up with friends and family cos everyone knows where the Spire is and you can see it from afar. It’s good for the teenagers as they use it to fix their hair and do their lippy.
Helen Moore: Waste of money 10 years ago and still a waste of money. Think of what that money could have been used for.
Jennifer Marsden: Ten years later it still looks like a giant needle!
Jack Delaney: It sure was a pure waste of money, that’s for sure.
Ide Fagan: Complete waste of money and an eyesore to boot.
Noreen Chan: Love it.
Gerry Brennan: Eyesore.
Ciaran Delaney: Was the needle in the sky concept anything to do with Dublin’s heroin problem?
Derek Doyle: As pointless now as it was then.
Jenny Ryan: Greatest waste of money of all time.
Lorna Long: Bulls**t – what is with that silly spike?
Louise Jameson Skerritt: Waste of money.
Theresa O’Meara: I still hate it as much as ever. It’s an ugly structure and a complete waste of money. The Floozie in the Jacuzzi was a lot better and they removed it.
Margaret Devine: It could be used as a skewer for all the muppets that are running our country.
Anthony Lyons: From the
‘Time in the Slime’ to the Floozie in the Jacuzzi’ to the electronic voting system to the Spire – all a waste of public money Mandy Nolan: Ridiculous looking thing. All that money wasted when our health system is in such a state. Absolute disgrace!
Audrey Edwards: Waste of money.
