An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Cllr. Jim O’Leary visited Barnaslingan Forest Trail this week to promote the hugely successful Active Cities Dublin Parks & Trails Challenge. Participants can complete walks in the parks and trails and as an incentive for taking part in the challenge they can enter a draw to win some amazing prizes.

Active Cities Dublin have come together with the four Dublin Sports Partnerships and Local Authorities to roll out this initiative during the month of July and due to popular demand, the challenge is being extended into the month of August. The aim of the initiative is to encourage people to increase their physical activity by discovering their local parks and trails and explore other beautiful walks in the greater Dublin area.

An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Jim O Leary said:

This is a fantastic initiative, and I’d highly recommend that people use the App, take advantage of our beautiful parks and discover the fantastic walking trials on our doorstep while we still have a bit of Summer left!

There are a total of 24 walks to choose from across Dublin as part of this challenge. A mix of parks and trails have been chosen in each area, 6 of which are in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown located in Loreto Park, Kilbogget Park, Shanganagh Park, Deerpark, Fairy Castle Loop (Ticknock) and The Scalp Lookout (Barnaslingan) trails.

Helena Cunningham, Acting Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council commented:

“It’s great to see the four Local Authorities and other key partners work together on such a positive project and supporting all the local community using our parks and trails.”

Other key partners on this project include Coillte, the Dublin Mountain Partnership, Leave No Trace, Decathlon and Dublin.ie. These key partners have worked together to maximise the use of both technology and collaboration to increase the public awareness of such valuable local resources. The challenge can be found on the Dublin Discovery Trails App all 24 locations are listed along with maps of each walk. Click here to visit the Dublin Discovery website and download the app.
