Sinéad O’Connor scores posthumous hits on Irish charts
Mike Finnerty 04 Aug 2023Even in passing, Sinéad O’Connor is still marking her mark on the music world.
O’Connor has two hits in the top 20 in this week’s Irish Singles Charts, marking the first full week of chart tracking after her passing.
Her signature hit Nothing Compares 2 U landed in at number 7 on this week’s chart, while her debut hit, 1988’s Mandinka hit number 15.
Nothing Compares 2 U hit number one in January 1990 and stayed at the top of the charts for six weeks.
The Prince-written song was among the biggest chart hits of the decade, also hitting number one in the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The track debuted at number 37 on last week’s single chart after only a day and a half of sales tracking, with charts published on a Friday afternoon.
Mandinka was O’Connor’s first hit back in 1988, hitting number 6, and has seen a resurgence in the wake of O’Connor’s passing, out charting new songs by modern artists like Post Malone and Travis Scott.
Tributes from the music world flooded in following the passing of O’Connor last week, with the likes of R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, Garbage singer Shirley Manson and Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello paying tribute to the late Dublin singer.
