The Roaring Banshees

The Roaring Banshees, from Devious Theatre, takes place at the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin, until August 31 (7.30pm).

After a failed assassination attempt on Eamon de Valera, a rogue Cumann na mBan unit flee across the Atlantic to escape the law. 

With Prohibition in full swing, they earn their keep by making bootleg poitín and selling it on to the Chicago mob. But it’s not long before a gang war breaks out with them caught in the middle, and the lethal skills they honed back home hunting Black and Tans are taken to the bullet-strewn streets of the Windy City. Intercession: Brighton Court

Presented by Halo Productions’, ‘Intercession: Brighton Court’, by Owen Jerome Ryan, is being staged at The New Theatre, 43 Essex Street East, Dublin 2 from August 27-31 (7.30pm plus Matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 31). 

It is a play about the choices we make and the choices that were made for us. Because who really controls their own destiny? What if we could just go back and change that one little thing? 

This play answers those questions by flinging three very different skins together in a lane in dirty old Dublin.

Astronomy exhibition

An exhibition celebrating 100 years of space exploration has been launched by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) at Wood Quay Venue, Dublin 8.

‘Above and Beyond’ takes the visitor on a chronological journey through a century of scientific, technological and cultural advancements (1919 to 2018), highlighting some of the most recognisable places and events that contributed to the greatest achievements in modern astronomy and space exploration.  

The exhibition is available for the public to visit, free of charge, at Wood Quay from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, until August 29.

Maritime exhibitions

The Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire is hosting two new exhibitions this month. 'From Coast to Coast’ is a collection of Donal Murray's oil paintings based on the ruggedness of the Wild Atlantic Way and his travels along the East Coast of the United States from Boston up to Maine. This exhibition runs until September 10. The other, 'Truailliú, Not You’ is for children and features upcycled sea creatures made from coastal waste.
