MOVIE: Vice squad teams up for new movie about Dick Cheney

ALTHOUGH George Bush Jr. was the man in charge during 9/11 and the subsequent invasion of Iraq, many believe it was actually vice president Dick Cheney who was pulling the strings of power.

‘Vice’ is a new movie from director Adam McKay (‘The Big Short’/’Anchorman 2’) which focuses on Cheney from his time starting out in Washington, to his stint as right hand man to the commander in chief.

With an all star cast featuring Christian Bale as Cheney, Steve Carell (yes, him again) as Donald Rumsfeld, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney and Sam Rockwell as Bush Jr., McKay has assembled an array of acting talent who all deliver top rate performances.

As for the film, it mixes the seriousness of ‘The Big Short’ and the ridiculousness of ‘Anchorman 2’, in a strange concoction.

For instance, the end credits roll halfway through, in a directorial decision that’s either genius or flawed.

For this reason you’re never quite sure whether to laugh or cry, and these tonal issues stop ‘Vice’ from being a really good movie.

That, and the fact the producers are attempting to hang the blame for the entire Iraq invasion on the shoulders of one man (Satan, as Bale recently called him).

Make a film about the people behind Cheney, and then you’re getting closer to the truth. Overall it’s a decent watch and deserves a review score of 3 presidential stars.

Two films still playing in theatres which we haven’t covered are ‘Colette’ and ‘Glass’ and you couldn’t find two more different offerings.

‘Colette’ tells the real life story of a famous French writer who was forced to publish under the name of her husband, until finally breaking free.

Ticking many politically correct boxes, the film is, of course, getting amazing reviews, but it’s not as good as you might hear, despite standout performances from Keira Knightley and Dominic West.

‘Glass’ on the other hand is probably worse than you might have heard, consisting of one hour of bad therapy followed by a second hour showdown between elderly powerless superheroes in a parking lot. Enjoy your week at the movies.
