MUSIC: It’s Metallica Vs The Cure next summer

IT’S the line-up that has divided music-loving fans across the country.

While there may not be an obvious similarity between the music of goth kings The Cure and heavy metal merchants, Metallica, the fact that both global acts are appearing here on the same day in two different venues next summer has some in a tizzy.

Some music fans took to social media last week to exclaim their astonishment that both acts are booked to play here on the same date…Metallica in Slane and The Cure in Malahide Castle.. on June 8.

Last week it was revealed that the Cure will return to Ireland to play their first headline show in seven years.

Tickets priced €69.50 (including booking fee) go on sale this Wednesday, October 10 at 9am from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide.

Tickets are strictly limited to four per person and the lead booker’s name will be assigned to all tickets.

Eaarlier this summer, The Cure celebrated their 40th anniversary in July with a very special sold out concert in London’s Hyde Park, almost 40 years to the day since their first ever show. Performing to 65,000 fans, the set list was packed with 29 hit songs including 'Pictures Of You', 'Lovesong', 'Inbetween Days, 'Just Like Heaven', 'A Forest', 'Lullaby', 'Boys Don’t Cry' and other fan favourites.

The Cure formed in Crawley, Sussex, and played its first show in 1978. Since then, the band led by Robert Smith (voice and guitars) have performed around 1,500 concerts to date. They have released 13 studio albums, several concert films, several live albums, some soundtrack songs, more than 40 singles, a couple of box sets and books, a greatest hits collection, a handful of covers and vnd various other creative projects. They have had 13 members in 40 years and 2019 line-up features Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), Roger O’Donnell (keyboards) and Reeves Gabrels (guitars)

Meanwhile, Metallica

will bring their WorldWired Tour to Slane Castle for their first Irish show in over a decade.

The dates for the new tour are Metallica’s first in the UK and Europe since the September 2017 to May 2018 indoor run that broke attendance records in 29 venues across the continent.

Kicking off May 1, 2019 at Lisbon’s Estadio Restelo, the 25 newly announced WorldWired shows across 20 countries include a good dozen cities not visited on those 2017-2018 legs of the tour—including Milan, Zürich, Dublin, Brussels (for the first time since 1988), Berlin, Moscow, Warsaw, Bucharest and Gothenburg, and first ever appearances in Trondheim Norway, Hämeenlinna Finland and Tartu Estonia.

“We promised we would be back . . . it’s the return of the European summer vacation,” the band stated. “Following the attendance breaking indoor arena run that ended in May of this year, we are psyched to announce that we will be returning to Europe in May of next year to do an outdoor run of our own shows, primarily in stadiums, but also the occasional park and even a castle thrown in for good measure.”

Special guests Ghost and Bokassa will provide support on all dates.

This tour also marks the appearance of another first in Europe with the Wherever I May Roam Black Ticket -  a single ticket that allows you Golden Circle access to any show on the tour.

Every ticket purchased includes a digital copy of the band’s 10th and current album, ‘Hardwired…To Self-Destruct’.
