DRUID’S production of ‘Waiting for Godot’ returns to Dun Laoghaire on April 3 following the success of its last production.
Based on Samuel Beckett’s renowned play, ‘Waiting for Godot’ tells the tale of two men waiting for a man called Godot at the side of the road, and the antics the pair get up to while they wait.
Starring as ‘Vladamir’, leading actor Marty Rea (pictured below) the winner of the Irish Times Theatre Award 2016, describes the production as a comic and entertaining experience.
“It is literally about them waiting for this man who never turns up,” he explains. “It’s also how they fill up their time waiting. There’s some very funny bits in it with lots of slapstick comedy. Very much Laurel and Hardy stuff.
“Although you think nothing it happens and it’s just about two guys waiting for someone, a lot actually happens, and you’ll have great craic watching.”
Druid’s production of the Beckett classic first went on tour in Ireland in 2016. This year, the company will continue the tour for five weeks around Ireland before hitting the USA.
For Rea, one of the biggest challenges preparing for the curtain rise was ensuring they didn’t let fans of Beckett down.
“I think the thing about Beckett is that he kind of saw life for what it is, no matter who, what or where you are. These two guys in this play, they could be anywhere.”
Directed by Garry Hynes and supported by The Arts Council, ‘Waiting for Godot’ stops at the Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire from April 3-4.
The tour continues to Sligo before arriving in the US.
