HAPPENINGS: A few things worth checking out this week

Rainbow Run

The Rainbow Run is now one of Ireland’s biggest fun runs! In its fourth year now, this unique run involves participants of all abilities and ages being doused from head to toe with coloured powder paint while they run, jog or walk the beautiful route along Dun Laoghaire’s West Pier on Saturday, September 16.

The Rainbow Run is entirely focussed on fun so there is no competitive atmosphere, no recorded times and no age restrictions. All that matters is that you enjoy yourself and finish covered in loads of colour. Tickets cost from €25 for adults and €15 for children with family tickets also available. Alternative Sunday Social Club

The Alternative Sunday Social Club is back and will be kicking off the next series of Sunday afternoon gigs in Toners of Baggot Street on September 17 at 4pm.

Over the coming weeks there’ll be gigs by The Dubtones, Francie Conway, The Tony Strickland Quartet, Spike Lancaster, Death in the Sickroom, Eileen Gogan and The Instructions, TV Smith (with support from Pete Holidai), Minnie and the Illywhackers, Tytania and The Hacklers. 

The first gig next Sunday is a three-band bash headlined by The Dubtones along with Amongst the Wolves & The Snübbed.

 

BlueFire Street Fest

The annual BlueFire Street Fest is back and bigger than ever on Saturday, September 16, in Smithfield Square for a colourful celebration of diversity!

It's the festival's 5th birthday so get ready for a fun-filled day featuring some of Ireland's best musicians, artists and street performers.

There will be lots of different activities like youth talks and dance workshops taking place through the day, so there should be something for everyone.

The best part? It's absolutely free!

 

We’re all mad here

Grainne O’Carroll will be presenting her innovative physical theatre piece, ‘We’re all mad here’, at the Dublin Fringe Festival on September 18-19, and September 21-24 at 8pm in the Fumbally Café.

In this bizarre work, experience interweaving physical theatre that draws upon mime, dance and visual art. Tickets are available. Visit www.fringefest.com

 

Fringe Festival Closing Night

Following the success of ‘Ich Liebe Dich Cabaret’ — one of the hottest tickets in the Dublin Fringe Festival 2016 — Film Fatale is back with its new cabaret show, ‘Closing Night’, which takes place in Liberty Hall for three shows only on September 15 and 16.

Join Film Fatale for three intimate evening shows – September 15 (8pm) and September 16 (6pm and 8.45pm) – of classic cabaret performance, burlesque and old school vaudeville, set to a soundtrack of Broadway hits and cabaret solos.  Tickets for Closing Night are priced at €24 and available via Fringe Fest.

 

Market grub

Stock up on great grub and fine wines at Honest2Goodness food market this Saturday. The weekly market has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods and wines. Honest2Goodness is run by passionate foodies whose aim is to share their love with as many as possible. 

The market is open from 9.30am to 4pm and it’s behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after Glasnevin Cemetery at 136 Slaney Close, Dublin Industrial Estate, Glasnevin.

 

Indian Film Festival of Ireland

The 8th Indian Film Festival of Ireland (September 15-17) opens with, the story of Poorna 

Malavath, a 13-year- old girl from a tribal Indian village who became the youngest girl to scale Mount Everest in 2014.

The festival will close with ‘Halal Daddy’, a movie that showcases multicultural Ireland at its very best. It was filmed in beautiful Sligo and is the first Irish film with an ethnic family at the centre. Dundrum Cinema will host the Festival Red Carpet Opening at 5pm on September 15.

 

Gearóid Farrelly at the Mill Theatre

Comedian Gearóid Farrelly takes his brand of chatty stand-up comedy to the dlr Mill Theatre, Dundrum Town Centre, on Saturday, September 16 at 8pm.

This show will address everything from Trump to decluttering and explains why you shouldn’t toilet train a cat. Gearóid has appeared at comedy festivals all over the world and supported the likes of Joan Rivers and Sarah Millican in the UK. Tickets: €12 / Bookings: www.milltheatre.ie / 01-2969340.

 

Depaul Raft Race 

On Saturday, September 16, homelessness charity Depaul’s annual Raft Race will be taking place, starting at 11am. 

Leaving suits and ties behind, 30 corporate teams will be taking to the water, powering their rafts around a course in Grand Canal Dock in a series of 500m races.

The event promises to be a great day out in the heart of the city, with entertainment for adults and kids alike including a DJ, face painting, food and prizes in a festive atmosphere for colleagues, supporters and family.
