Underground run to mark port tunnel 10th anniversary 

THE Dublin Tunnel will host a 10km Underground Run on Sunday, March 26 at 9.30am marking the 10th anniversary of its opening. 

The event is a collaboration between Focus Ireland, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), Egis, Dublin City Council, Dublin Port Company and Elite Event management to raise €150,000 for Focus Ireland’s work to combat and prevent homelessness.

The tunnel was officially opened in December 2006, initiatially to HGVs. It opened to all traffic in January 2007.

This year, the event will be run by Elite Event Management which is promising to bring the dynamic urban vibe of the Dublin streets, under the city to provide an exciting and unique opportunity for the large population of runners in Ireland to run in the tunnel.

Sinead Price, Focus Ireland co-director of fundraising, said it is “truly shocking” to see a record total of more than 7,148 people currently experiencing homelessness in Ireland. 

“Focus Ireland is driven by the fundamental belief that homelessness is wrong and our staff work tirelessly to help families, children and individuals overcome the terrible impact being homeless has on them,” said Ms Price. 

“Events like the Underground Run are really important to help us raise the vital funds we need to ensure we can cope with the increased demand for our services.  

“We would like to sincerely thank Elite Event Management, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Egis and Dublin City Council for organising this great event and we would encourage everyone to sign up for the road race which will support our work to end homelessness.”

Event partners, Egis, who operate and maintain the Dublin Tunnel on behalf of TII, have kindly agreed to close the tunnel on the morning of the event.  

An Urban Village Market filled with city vendors, bean bags and music will be the centre of operations on the day of the event.
