HAPPENINGS: A few things worth checking out this week

Press Play Showcase

There’s a showcase of activities created by communities in Finglas, Cabra, Santry, Whitehall and Ballymun taking place on Thursday, March 2, from 11am-12.30pm at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7.

The event is free but ticketed and includes performances of mini-monologues, a community written anthem and a 100-strong performance of a new Irish Haka in the courtyard of Collins Barracks.

On display will be videos documenting the Culture Club experience – a social event with an eye on culture held in Collins Barracks in the past few months. This is part of Dublin City Council’s Dublin’s Culture Connects programme.

For tickets email info@dublinscultureconnects.ie to reserve a place.

The Journey of Food

This free event of tales, songs and recipes will reflect on the stories by each of the community groups involved in the Around the Table project led by Dublin’s Culture Connects and the artists Donal Fallon, Jennie Moran and Jeanette Lowe.

It includes a book that will be published featuring the stories told by the communities and guided walks compiled as the projects moved through the city, reflecting life that in some cases no longer exists.

The event also invites you to reflect on your memories, journey and city. This is part of Dublin City Council’s Dublin’s Culture Connects programme.

It’s happening on Saturday, March 4, from 1.30-3.30pm in the National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

For a free ticket email info@dublinscultureconnects.ie to reserve a place.

Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom

Holly is a young fairy princess, who is still learning how to fly and her magic doesn’t always go quite according to plan. Her best friend, Ben the Elf, doesn’t have wings and he doesn’t do magic, but he runs very fast and flies on the back of Gaston the Ladybird. They live in the Little Kingdom, a tiny land where flowers and grass rise high above them and every day is an adventure.

From the makers of Peppa Pig, the BAFTA award-winning television animation, don’t miss Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom live on stage at the Olympia Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 & 5. Shows at 1pm and 4pm on Saturday and 10am and 1pm on Sunday. Tickets cost from €23.65 or €94.50 for a family of four.

Tomato Red opens at IFI

Oscar-nominated Irish director Juanita Wilson’s (As If I’m Not There) second feature is an adaptation of Daniel Woodrell’s 1998 ‘country noir’ novel. Woodrell’s work has previously been brought to the big screen by Ang Lee with Ride with the Devil (1999) and Debra Granik with Winter’s Bone (2010).

Tickets for the screening of ‘Tomato Red’ + Q&A are now on sale from www.ifi.ie and the IFI Box Office – 01-6793477.

The Humours of Bandon

On the eve of the Irish Open championship, we meet Annie, a 16 year old Dubliner, as she charts us through the various successes and disappointments of her Irish Dancing life. We share her mind numbing commitment and burning desire to win the Irish Open title. Will she win and, if so, in what way?

‘The Humours of Bandon’ is a coming of age story, full of heart, humour and wisdom, for anyone who had a childhood passion that threatened to overwhelm their life.

You can see a production of the story by Fishamble: The New Play Company, in Axis Ballymun, at 8pm on Thursday, March 2. Tickets cost €15 from axisballymun.ie.

Indians are on their way home

The Indians are coming home to Dublin with modern takes of some American classics to be unveiled at the Carole Nash Irish Motorbike & Scooter Show in the RDS from March 3 to 5.

Franklin Motorcycles is the first company to be granted dealership rights in Ireland for the world famous Indian Motorcycles. The company is named after Charles Bayly Franklin, the Dublin engineer who more than 100 years ago created the original Indian Scout and Indian Chief bikes of the roaring 1920s.

The modern incarnations of both those legendary bikes will be on display at the Carole Nash Irish Motorbike & Scooter Show this weekend

You don’t have to be a girl to enter and the winner gets a romantic candle lit night in for two, a luxury cruise in a boat of your own making and a full set of bespoke rubber gloves.

Joe Rooney (Father Damo), Patrick McDonnell (Eoin McLove) and Michael Redmond (Father Stone) also come together for the first time in this side splitting version of Riverdance as a show finale.

It’s happening on Friday, March 3, in Axis Ballymun. Tickets cost €15 from axisballymun.ie.
