HAPPENINGS: A few things worth checking out around the city

The Archaeology of 1916

Dublin City Council hosts an archaeology morning seminar in Wood Quay on Wednesday, December 14, from 9am-1pm. The seminar presents interesting results of an innovative project that set out to discover the surviving historical landscape of the city following the 1916 Rising.

What was found elsewhere in the city was sometimes surprising; areas not known to have seen heavy fighting, such as Camden Street, displayed most of the physical evidence for bullet holes, where buildings thought to have been destroyed, such as the Linen Hall complex off North King Street, still retained substantial fabric.

The project is funded by Dublin City Council, UCD and The Heritage Council and is an initiative between the Planning and Property Development Department and the School of Archaeology UCD.

Bookings can be made through www.eventbrite.ie.

It’s a Wonderful Bleedin’ Life

This re-imagining of the original heart-warming story is set in our very own Dublin city. The familiar festive story by Philip Van Doren Stern tells the tale of a good man driven to the brink of suicide on Christmas Eve, when a guardian angel approaches and shows him a world without his existence.

Gary Duggan brings his trademark contemporary style to this adaptation where we find ourselves at The Summit Inn in Howth where we meet Georgie Travers, on edge at last orders on Christmas Eve.

The barman has disappeared to pull down the shutters, leaving Georgie with just one other straggler. Oddball Laurence won’t let Georgie finish his last pint in peace, working hard to convince his new bar buddy that Georgie’s life till now has not been one monstrous disappointment for all involved. And there’s a better possible future for Georgie than his own planned moonlit stroll to the cliff walk.

It runs at Bewley’s Café Theatre from Monday to Saturday at 1pm. See www.bewleyscafetheatre.com for details.
