A perfect way to close the 1916 centenary celebrations
Dublin People 02 Dec 2016
DECEMBER is shaping up to be a busy month at GPO Witness History on O’Connell Street.

With the centenary of 1916 coming to an end, the historic venue has plenty of activities lined up this month designed to give visitors an insight into the events of 100 years ago.
On December 6, between 3pm-5pm, there will be a screening of ‘1916 Irish Rebellion’ (previously shown on RTÉ), a documentary about the events of Easter Week 1916 in Dublin. Narrated by Liam Neeson, it features a combination of rarely seen archival footage, new segments filmed on location worldwide and interviews with leading international experts.
On December 10, 11 and 18, GPO Witness History will host renowned Irish choir Anúna’s only Irish public performances of 2016, featuring many classic Christmas songs and a selection of their material. This will take place in the atmospheric and impressive inner courtyard.
Shows will take place at 1.30pm and 3pm on the above dates and entry is covered by the cost of your admission to GPO Witness History. Book online at www.gpowitnesshistory.com to avoid disappointment.
Finally, a children’s workshop will take place on December 27, 28, 29 and 30, as well as January 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Entitled ‘The Story of Ireland through History and Legends’, the workshop will take place each day at 2pm. It will help children gain an understanding of how Irish legends were used by Padraig Pearse, Countess Markievicz and others as a metaphor for Ireland’s struggle for independence.
Each workshop lasts an hour and a half and includes storytelling, with imagery to bring the examples to life. There is also a tour of the areas within the exhibition which relate to the use of Irish heroes and their tales.
It’s suitable for children aged between 6 and 13. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. There is no additional charge, as entry is covered through the general admission fee.
GPO Witness History is a great way for families to end the centenary year of 1916.
