EITHNE Healy, from Raheny, joined singer-songwriter Shane Filan at the launch of the Concern Fast recently.

The former Westlife star turned solo artist is encouraging participants to go without something they love for 24 hours to raise funds for hungry children in the world’s poorest countries.

A self-confessed golf fanatic, Shane has decided to ‘putt’ away his clubs on Fast Day, Thursday, November 26, to highlight how a small sacrifice can make a huge difference to the lives of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.

“I’m honoured to be Concern Worldwide’s ambassador for its Fast campaign 2015,” he said. “I’ve grown up admiring the work of Concern and I’m happy to help in any way I can to raise funds for hungry children and people.

“The Fast campaign aims to reach those less fortunate than ourselves. I’ve been passionate about charity work stretching back to my Westlife days and it’s always nice to be able to give something back and help publicise the work of Concern.”

Traditionally, the Fast campaign focused on giving up food but now people can fast from anything such as TV, mobile phones, chocolate, make up, or their favourite hobby such as golf, which Shane is doing.

“Ireland has a fantastic record in helping the poor and needy across the globe and the success of the Fast campaign over the years is testament to the commitment Irish people have in raising funds for people suffering from hunger and poverty,” Shane added.

“It would be great if people dug deep for the campaign on November 26.”

Almost three million children will die from the effects of malnutrition this year, which is the equivalent of a child dying every 11 seconds.
