THERE was a lot of apprehension at schools around the country last week when D-Day arrived in the form of this year’s Leaving Cert results.

All those months of hard graft in the study room came down to what was on a piece of paper perused nervously by anxious students ready to learn their fate.

Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan was first to congratulate the 57,929 Leaving Certificate students who received their exam results.

The minister said: “Today marks the end of a long wait for you, your families and your teachers.
“It is great that so many students have achieved grades that reflect the dedication and effort they invested in their second level education. Now you have the opportunity to decide what you would like to do next.”

Minister O’Sullivan said that while it was a very important day for everyone involved, it was also the beginning of the next stage of the young people’s lives.

“Students have many options available to them, from the traditional higher education route, to the hugely varied opportunities across the further education sector,” she said.

“For anyone who may be disappointed with their results, I would urge them to carefully consider all of the possibilities that are open to them – every student can still achieve exactly what they want to.”
