NOMINATIONS are now open for the 2015 People of the Year Awards, giving the public the chance to honour an ordinary person who did something life-changing.

The categories include International Person of the Year, Young Person of the Year, Community Group of the Year, and Sports Person of the Year as well as a more general People of the Year Award for achievements across a range of areas.

The closing date for nominations is Monday, September 14 and the awards, which are organised by Rehab, will be broadcast live on RTÃ? One on Saturday, December 5.

Mo Flynn, CEO of Rehab, said:

“These awards are an incredible way of honouring heroes in our local communities. We hear stories all the time of people’s bravery, their commitment to their community or their selfless dedication – the People of the Year Awards give us as a country the opportunity to honour these people, to recognise and value their contribution, and to show them that what they did changed alives.

Adrian Lynch, Channel Controller, RTÃ? One added:

‘We are very proud to once again broadcast the People of the Year Awards on RTÃ? One. These everyday heroes represent Irish people at our very best and, rightly, make us feel proud. Through our live broadcast we are delighted to enable a national audience to come together to hear their stories and share in an important celebration.

The People of the Year Awards have been organised by Rehab since they began in 1974. Previous high-profile award winners include Katie Taylor, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, Christy Moore, and Sir Terry Wogan.

Dublin has been well represented in the past with winners including Gay Byrne, Bob Geldolf, Stephen Roche, Maureen Potter, Veronica Guerin, Eddie Jordan, and Ronan Keating.
