Increased Garda resources for Howth demanded

TWO Northside TDs have called for an increased Garda presence on the East Pier in Howth over the summer months.

Deputies Finian McGrath and Tommy Broughan, both Independents who will contest Dublin Bay North in the general election, have raised the issue of recent anti-social behaviour in Howth with Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald.

Deputy Broughan called for significant resources to be devoted to addressing

“recent serious incidents

? of anti-social behaviour around Howth Harbour.

“During the recent spell of sunny weather, residents in Howth have complained of public drinking on the East and West Piers and of mayhem and anti-social behaviour resulting from this drinking,

? said Deputy Broughan.

“Residents and visitors to Howth have complained of youths with trays of beer and children’s buggies packed with beer being brought into the har- bour area.

Minister Fitzgerald said she has brought the issues raised by the Deputies to the attention of the Garda authorities.

“I am informed by the Garda authorities that Operation Irene is a policing plan designed to address issues such as those referred to, and that it commenced on June 1 and will run until August 30,

? said Minister Fitzgerald.

“I am further informed that Operation Irene will provide an increased Garda presence in the vicinity of Howth Pier over the summer months.

“Gardaí will continue to patrol and deal with all incidents as deemed appropriate.

“In this regard, gardaí motor persons disembarking from trains at Howth DART Station and actively patrol the area, with public order patrols of beaches and public amenities being carried out at appropriate times.

Minister Fitzgerald said she has also been advised that a multi-agency approach is being pursued with ongoing liaison be- tween An Garda Síochána, DART Control, Fingal County Council, the Harbour Master and Íarnród ireann with a view to address- ing any issues that may arise.

“In addition, An Garda Síochána are reminding local shops and businesses of their legal obligations in relation to the sale of intoxicating liquor,

? she added.
