THE Irish Sports Council’s report into Sport and Physical Activity among those aged over 16 in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown was officially launched last week in the National Yacht Club.

The positive findings of the report highlight the great work that has been done in the county in increasing participation in sport and exercise

Independent councilor Deirdre Donnelly welcomed the report.

“I feel there is a positive attitude towards sporting activity in the county, with more than 55 per cent of the population active in sport at least once a week, which is higher than the national figure of 46 per cent.

“It is great to see that recreational walking and running has a high rate of participation since DLRCC does a wonderful job maintaining our parks so well,

Cllr Donnelly also noted with satisfaction that disability sport participation levels in the county are also higher than the national average. She expressed disappointment, however, at the lack of a swimming pool in Stillorgan.

“The pool closed down in 2013 and there are many individuals, clubs and schools in the area who are looking forward to a new facility in the future,

? she added.

“According to this report, swimming is the second most popular sport among women in the county so I really feel there is a demand for a new pool.
