Adams appeals for release of local student in Egypt
Dublin People 19 Jun 2015
SINN Féin leader Gerry Adams has appealed directly to the President of Egypt over the continued detention of Ibrahim Halawa, a 19-year-old Southsider who has been languishing in an Egyptian prison for almost two years.

Mr Adams has asked that the President intervene in the case of Halawa, a student from Firhouse, who recently went on hunger strike, according to reports.
In a letter to the Egyptian leader on Halawa’s case, Mr Adams said:
“There is widespread concern in Ireland at his continued detention and the constant delays in his trial.
“His family are deeply worried for Ibrahim’s mental wellbeing after his case was adjourned earlier this month for the seventh time.
?
Ibrahim was only 17-years-old at the time of his arrest. He is now 19. He went to Egypt on holiday.
Ibrahim and his three sisters were among those arrested after taking refuge in a mosque during protests in Cairo.
The next court date has been set for August 2.
Mr Adams added in his letter:
“I know that the Irish Government has been raising this case with the Egyptian Government.
“I am sure you can appreciate that Ibrahim’s family are deeply concerned for him.
“I ask you to intervene on humanitarian grounds to ensure Ibrahim’s speedy release and return to his family in Ireland.
