FINDING NEMO: Dublin Port pup Nemo had his name aptly chosen by the canine care staff at Dogs Trust

NORTHSIDE canine charity Dogs Trust has made room at its Finglas centre for 11 puppies seized by Gardaí and Dublin Port Officials at Dublin Port recently.

The poor pups were discovered in a car attempting to board a ferry destined for the UK, without the appropriate veterinary and transport documentation.

Security at Dublin Port and An Garda Siochána made contact with Dogs Trust following discovery of the pups, which were in a car driven by a woman.

Mark Beazley, Executive Director at Dogs Trust, said it’s not the first time the charity has encountered such a seizure.

“EU regulations state that all pets travelling between EU states must be compliant with certain conditions including a full pet passport, microchip and proof of rabies vaccine,

? he said.

“We are very grateful to the authorities for their proactive approach in this matter and continued vigilance at Dublin Port.

“Although the origin of these particular pups has yet to be established, Ireland is known as the puppy farming capital of Europe with approximately 90,000 puppies bred here every single year.

“Following the opening of our new puppy wing last year we are thankfully in a position where we can step in and assist in seizures like this.

The ISPCA and Gardaí are continuing with their enquiries as to the origin and destination of the seized pups but in the meantime they have been appropriately named after types of fish, given the site of their rescue.

They are now being cared for by the team at Dogs Trust and receiving any veterinary care required.

“We are urgently looking for foster carers for these pups whilst this matter is under investigation,

? said Beazley.

Dogs Trust is currently operating at full capacity with over 200 dogs and puppies in care, including pregnant bitches, week-old puppies and some golden oldies.

The charity is appealing for foster homes. For more information visit www.dogstrust.ie or call to Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre, Old Ashbourne Road, Finglas. Opening hours are 12-4pm including weekends. Closed on Tuesdays.
