FIFTH year students from Plunket College in Whitehall have launched a book as part of a project that involved swapping skills and knowledge with local elderly people.

‘Words of Wisdom’ was launched at a coffee morning for parents, teachers, staff and local senior citizens in the school library. During the launch students raised money for Age Action Ireland and anybody who took a copy of the book was invited to make a donation to the charity.

Student Sean Hyland explained how the book, which was part of the school’s Young Social Innovators (YSI) project, came about.

“We invited elderly people from our community into our school to take part in a skills exchange programme,

? he said.

“We taught them technology while they thought us life skills, Maths and knitting. The book captures words of advice from both parties.

Plunket College was one of 60 schools chosen out of 400 entries to speak at the recent YSI finals thanks to the students fantastic world with older people in the community.

“We also got to visit the Dail, where two of our students attended a questions and answers session with politicians,

? Sean added.

“Vita and Stephen got to present our issues to make them aware of issues for young people today. Vita delivered our questions with great confidence and we were very happy with the answers we got.
