‘Jake’s Law’ motion proposing the introduction of lower speed limits in housing estates has been passed by South Dublin County Council.
Cllr Sarah Holland (SF) had proposed the motion in a bid to reduce speed limits in residential areas.
“Jake Brennan was only 6-years-old when he was knocked down and killed in a Kilkenny housing estate,
? Cllr Holland said.
“His parents started a campaign hoping to avoid this heartbreak for other parents by reducing speed limits.
“The Government have passed this responsibility to local authorities.
“Jake’s Law would have created a standardised statutory speed limit of 20km per hour to apply in housing estates as defined in the legislation. The objective is to introduce a level of safety to those housing estates in which children live, play chasing, kick football, hurl and ride their bicycles.
?
According to Cllr Holland, between the years 1997 – 2012, 262 children aged 14 and under lost their lives and a further 1,115 were seriously injured on our roads.
“The motion had cross party support, and management here will be carrying out a mapping exercise,
? Cllr Holland added.
“The issue of speeding in residential areas has come up again and again at residents’ meetings and traffic calming measures are hot on our agendas.
“The reduction of speed limits will safeguard our children.
