DUBLIN racing driver Andrew Watson was back in action again in the Ginetta GT Supercup where, after an impressive weekend of racing, he found himself in third place challenge for the title.

Watson (19) who is living at Grand Canal Dock is a student of Sociology and Economics at Trinity College Dublin.

He got off to a great start at Rockingham Circuit in Northamptonshire and, after finishing fastest in practice, went on to qualify in second place.

A three place grid penalty however, picked up by the young driver during his previous weekend of racing at Knockhill Circuit, pushed him back down to P5, where he began race one of the weekend.

In the first race of the weekend, Watson, whose sponsors include Woking Shopping Centre, Westland, Donnelly Group and Adoreboard, managed to force his way up into fourth place. But despite an impressive drive, he was unable to move further up the field and ended race one in P4.

“The penalty from Knockhill didn’t help,

? he said.

“It put us on a bit of a back foot but we just had to focus and do what we could to push on.

Just hours before the final race of the weekend Andrew learned of the sad news of his uncle Rodney’s sudden death, but the teen was encouraged by all his family to take part in the last race in the spirit of what his uncle’s wishes would have been.

The young driver managed to get off to a good start in race two of the weekend and, after two laps, moved his way up into second place.

Chasing down championship leader, Charlie Robertson, Watson went on to take the lead, which he successfully held on to.

On taking his third win of the championship, the Douglas Motorsport driver said:

“It took everything I had to pull myself together and concentrate on that final race. I gave it everything I had, physically, mentally and emotionally.

“When I crossed the line I really was overcome with emotion. I want to dedicate the win to my uncle, who loved all kinds of racing.

Watson is now in third place in the Ginetta GT Supercup, with just two race weekends remaining.

He will be back in action on September 27 and 28 at Silverstone.
