Big night for Culture vultures

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys officially launches Culture Night 2014 in St Patrick’s Park

CULTURE vultures will be well catered for as Dublin’s venues get ready to throw open their doors for one of the most anticipated events of the year.

The ninth annual Culture Night was launched in St Patrick’s Park by Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys last week.

On Friday, September 19 a total of 36 regions, towns and cities around Ireland will buzz with events and live performances as one of the most popular cultural extravaganzas returns for another year.

Museums, galleries, cathedrals, studios, observatories, libraries, parks, Government buildings and theatres across the capital will open up their doors for free visits, tours, workshops, readings, performances and demonstrations.

With over 200 of Dublin’s cultural gems opening, 43 new to 2014, Culture Night promises to be an evening of marvel and surprise for all ages and every member of the family.

There is a diverse mix of events with something to suit every age and interest from live music to interactive tours in the diverse range of participating venues across the capital.

Record crowds are expected this year as the city connects for a special night of shared exploration, experience and enjoyment.

“Dublin City Council is delighted to be supporting Culture Night 2014.

“Since its inception Culture Night has grown year on year and is now Dublin and Ireland’s largest participatory cultural event.

“Culture Night offers something for everyone and it is great to see so many people come out across the city and county to take part in the best of culture Dublin has to offer.

A new and exciting event this year, Downstairs Dublin will see the outside basements of Merrion Square come alive for the night with a series of talks, installations, projections and pop-up events.

New venues this year include guided tours of the official residence of the President of Ireland, Áras an Uachtaráin, and former home of the Guinness family and now State residence Farmleigh House.

The Guinness Archives at the Guinness Storehouse is a unique chance to have a specialised talk with the archivists and view their most precious documents, followed by a session in the exclusive Connoisseur Bar.

Airfield Dundrum, Ireland’s largest urban farm and food experience, opens its doors with a schedule of tours and talks.
