SOARING temperatures helped boost the number of participants at a recent fun-filled event to mark National Bike week 2014 in Ballymun.

The annual family cycle is organised by Global Action Plan (GAP) Ireland and the Rediscovery Centre and this year over 125 children turned out on their bikes at Poppintree Park for the event.

There was lots on offer besides bikes at the cycle-themed event, including jewellery making from recycled bike parts, a ring toss with old bicycle tyres and a 2.5km cycle treasure trail with the winner receiving a refurbished bike.

Orla Kelly, from GAP Ireland, said the event was a great success.

“The idea behind the nature trail was to build a habit of regular exercise, in a safe environment, for all the family and bring back cycling for the long bright summer evenings,

? she continued.

For the second year running, the popular Mr Ronaldo Fanzini of professional entertainers Fanzini brothers was the highlight of the day.

Mr Fanzini performed some daring, spectacular feats, juggling burning torches, knifes and for the finale, juggling both knives and torches on a unicycle.

Locals said they enjoyed the day out and all the events. Parent Louise Carey from Ballymun said:

“the event was a brilliant way to spend an afternoon at your local park.

Another parent, Richie Thompson, added:

“A lovely day out, and we’re looking forward to next year already!

National Bike Week is Ireland’s biggest annual celebration and promotion of all that’s great about bikes and cycling. Held over a week in June, bike themed events are organised by local authorities, community groups and cycling organisations throughout Ireland encouraging individuals and families to rethink their day-to-day journeys.

Vanessa Moore, CEO of GAP, described it as a

“a wonderful National event

?.

“It raises the profile of cycling and shows how easily it can be part of our everyday lives,

? she continued.

“Global Action Plan has hosted an event for bike week over the last number of years and each year we see an increase in the children participating and families attending.

“This year again saw record numbers attend on the day.

GAP Ireland acknowledged support from the Rediscovery centre and volunteers from GAP’s Youth Environment Network (YEN) and Ballymun Regional Youth Resource (BRYR).

The event was funded by Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL)
