PUPILS are forever battling with their parents over issues such as homework, being late for school and not keeping their uniforms in good condition.

However, earlier this month, there was a battle of a much different sort between pupils at a Northside school and their parents, and it wasn’t long before the teachers joined in too!

The pupils at Belgrove Senior Boys’ School put on a fantastic show with their performance of the Haka Gaelach to commemorate the Millennium anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf.

The boys, all 320 of them, staged their very own Battle of Clontarf by staving off the threat of the

‘Viking’ hordes (the parents) who arrived on shore on the promenade at 12noon. They beached their boats (compliments of Viking Splash Tours) across from the Garda station at the junction of Alfie Byrne Road and Clontarf Road.

With meticulous planning, Belgrove’s finest, led by Brian Boru’s illustrious descendent, Bríd Rua O’Brien (aka teacher Marian O’Connor), were well prepared to repel the foe.

Clad in green and white, the boys managed to halt the

‘Vikings’ in their steps and struck terror into them with a blood-curdling rendition of the Haka Gaelach.

The

‘Vikings’ were led by no less a warrior than the ferocious Bruiser (frequently to be found planning his tactics from the Belgrove Junior Boys’ School Principal’s office – aka John O’Sullivan).

It proved to be an historic occasion for the boys, their parents and the teachers, and will no doubt be the talk of school reunions in the years to come!
