NATURE lovers in St Catherine’s Estate and St Catherine’s National School, Rush, took part in a local event to mark National Tree Week.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr Kieran Dennison attended a tree planting and ownership event at the junction of

‘The Park’ and

‘The Avenue’. It was held in recognition of the work of local residents of all generations who have taken ownership of the trees in their locality.

Local resident Mary Ryan who has worked closely with Fingal County Council’s Community and Operations departments, said:

“Ours is a simple project whose ethos is to start small and grow in time.

The council planted 10 cherry blossom trees for which the estate’s residents, in conjunction with children from St Catherine’s National School, have taken ownership.

The trees were allocated to the children and many of them could see “their” tree from their home.

“Local residents are hoping that this is just the start of a tree planting relationship between Fingal County Council and St Catherine’s Estate,

? Ms Ryan added.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr Dennison was welcomed by all and launched the project, where he spoke about the importance of trees in the landscape and how the cherry tree is revered in its native Japan.

Ger O’Shea, Principal of St Catherine’s National School, spoke about the beautiful tree-filled grounds in the national school and how the children were continuing to spread the love of trees outside the school.

“The children are very fortunate to have an abundance of trees in and around their estate and in their school grounds,

? said Mr O’Shea.

“A love of and knowledge of trees and nature is encouraged in school with tree walks and nature study in the grounds, and it is hoped that this has sown a love of the outdoors and respect for nature in the children.

“Trees bring beauty into our lives and make where we live a more pleasant place.
