OVER 700 locals have signed a petition to have a new children’s playground constructed in Crumlin’s Willie Pearse Park.

Cllr Ray McHugh, Sinn Féin’s representative for Crumlin/Kimmage, gathered the signatures from local residents and presented the petition to the area office of Dublin City Council alongside Cllr Criona Ni Dhálaigh (SF).

Cllr McHugh, who has campaigned for many years for this facility, said he was going to make it a priority in his election manifesto.

“When my children were growing up we had a fine playground in the park and it was constantly used by local children,

? he said.

“Obesity was supposed to be a priority for the Minister Of Health so we need to put our money where our mouth is and tackle this problem.

“Exercise and outside activities should be encouraged and children need a local playground where they can use up their energy.

Cllr McHugh paid tribute to Dublin City Council for the recent work in Pearse Park where part of the unsightly surrounding wall was replaced with railings.

The councillor said residents were grateful for the work and effort put in to improve the area.

“The swimming pool is being renovated and is expected to re-open in August/ September,

? Cllr McHugh added.

“And a playground, a designated dog area with bins for waste and an improvement in the walkways in the park will complete the facilities for all users of the park that can be enjoyed for years to come.
