Over 100,000 to disembark in Dún Laoghaire this year

THE Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has been applauded for attracting over 25 cruise liner calls to the seaside town this year.

Local TD and Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett, hailed the company’s success that he said was all the more remarkable considering that just two ships visited Dún Laoghaire in 2012.

“Last year’s cruise calls included sister flagships of the Cunard Line, Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2, the two largest ships ever built,

? Deputy Barrett stated.

“Many of the world’s major cruise lines have now included Dún Laoghaire as a significant port of call in their itineraries.

“The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company will undoubtedly capitalise further in the years ahead on the cruise line business, with the possibility of shore excursions and overnight stays to generate even further revenue for the region.

It is estimated that a record 100,000 passengers and crews will disembark in Dún Laoghaire this year, representing a 200 per cent increase on 2013, and boosting the local economy by over e10 million.

“These calls to Dún Laoghaire will serve to reinforce the promising outlook for the area’s fast-growing cruise sector, as well as boosting its tourism potential by tapping into the e27 billion global cruise tourism market,

? Deputy Barrett added.

“An eventful 2014 cruise season will greatly enhance Dún Laoghaire’s growing reputation as an international cruise tourism hub, as well as contributing on a positive level to the revitalisation and restoration of the local economy and stable employment.
