Deal for Garda station use to be copper-fastened
Dublin People 21 Feb 2014
TWO community groups are set to share a new home in their local area.
An arrangement is set to be copper-fastened that will see Rush Musical Society (RMS) and Rush Tidy Towns having use of the former Garda station in the town.
According to Rush Musical Society, the Commissioners of Public Works have agreed in principle to the use of the former Garda station by the society and Rush Tidy Towns, subject to a formal licence arrangement being put in place over the coming months.
The news heralds the beginning of a new era that will allow RMS to build on its reputation as a leading Dublin musical society for over 25 years.
It will be one of the few musical societies with a dedicated rehearsal space and spiritual home.
The building is ideally located close to the Chapel Green area and the Millbank Theatre, where the society stages its annual productions.
The space will allow for an increase in the programme of activity for the society over the coming years.
RMS chairperson Barry Kavanagh described the development as great news for the community.
“We have a strong membership of over 70 people who will finally have a rehearsal space which will facilitate new and old members to continuously strive to master their craft of musical theatre,
? said Mr Kavanagh.
“Our hope is that this space will allow us the opportunity of developing a youth society in the near future to provide a platform for an ever increasing number of young people in the area whose interests lie in stage performance and musical theatre.
Rush Tidy Towns have done tremendous work over the past number of years to improve the town for all who live and work there. This news couldn’t come at a better time for this dedicated community group.
Deirdre McMenamin, from Rush Tidy Towns, said:
“We see this as a hugely positive watershed for the town of Rush. With a base we can now avail of assistance via the CE and TUS Community Work Placement initiatives to enhance and build on the great work currently done by volunteers.

The collaboration and co-operation between the two groups demonstrates the best in community spirit. Once the details of the licence have been ironed out, both groups will consider accommodating other community groups from the town where possible thereby enriching the fabric of cultural and community life for all.
