Gardai are targeting drink driving offences

GARDAI issued a high-visibility warning to motorists earlier this month as part of a campaign to reduce drink-driving.

Hundreds of drivers were stopped at special checkpoints set up in Phibsboro as part of Operation Surround, a co-ordinated strategy that targets particular locations around the country.

The operation is designed to detect key offences that contribute to fatal and serious injury traffic collisions through Mandatory Alcohol Testing (MAT).

Phibsboro was targeted between 12.30-1.30am on February 9 with checkpoints set up at Phibsboro Road, North Circular Road and Doyles Corner.

Under the direction of Assistant Commissioner, John Twomey, checkpoints were also in operation in Crumlin Village at the same time.

Gardaí say the objective of the co-ordinated checkpoints is for strict enforcement of drink-driving legislation and to provide a high visibility deterrent to possible offenders.

The aim of the Operation Surround campaign is to protect vulnerable road users, reduce fatal and serious collisions and to educate drivers regarding their responsibilities.

During the operations in Phibsboro and Crumlin a total of 1,276 vehicles passed through checkpoints with 650 drivers tested for alcohol. Two arrests were made for suspicion of drink driving. Two unaccompanied drivers were also detected.

Speaking afterwards Assistant Commissioner Twomey said:

“This was the second in a series of such operations.

“I would like to thank motorists for their co-operation during these checkpoints and as the figures show, the vast majority of people tested were compliant with the legislation.

“I want to also send a very strong message to all drivers and remind them that members of An Garda Síochána are out all around the country, day and night, targeting drink driving.

“The message is clear, never ever drink and drive.
