Fine Gael selects Northside candidates

FINE Gael last week selected four candidates to contest two Northside wards in the local elections.

Cllr Pat Crimmins and Cllr Naoise O Muiri have been selected to contest the Clontarf ward, while Cllr Anthony Lavin and Dr Keith Redmond will be bidding for seats in the Howth Malahide ward.

Cllr Crimmins, who has been working in the Donaghmede ward for the past seven years, said he is relishing the challenge of representing the people of the Clontarf ward as a Dublin City Councillor and vowed to do his

“upmost to help all in this area

?.

Cllr Crimmins is originally from Glanmire in Cork but has lived in Dublin since 1966. He moved to the Raheny area in 1973 where he raised his family with his late wife Esther.

Cllr O Muiri is a sitting councillor for the Clontarf ward and his profile was raised considerably when he was Lord Mayor of Dublin in 2012/2013.

Cllr Lavin was co-opted onto Fingal County Council after Alan Farrell was elected to the Dail in 2011. An extremely active member of the council, he is involved in the Malahide Castle Board, Drinan Enterprise Centre and Portmarnock Community School.

In 2013, he chaired the Howth/Malahide Area Committee and now serves on the Environment and Planning SPC, as well as the Joint Policing Committee.

His proposer on the night, Brian Murphy, said:

“Anthony has proved to be an excellent representative for his area and has embedded himself in the work for the community having built up great experience before ever becoming a councillor.

Dr Keith Redmond is a dentist with an extensive practice in Sutton Cross. He has had a long-time interest in politics and presents a politics programme on NEAR FM radio weekly.

Dr Redmond was formerly a member of the PDs but has been a member of Fine Gael since 2011 and has been active at elections and referendums since then.

His proposer Vincent Crowley said:

“Keith brings a wide knowledge of the issues that affect the area of Sutton and Howth and will bring his professionalism to the task of canvassing in order to win a seat.

On the night of the convention, warm tributes were paid to Cllr Joan Maher who is retiring after representing the Sutton/Howth/Baldoyle area for 30 years.
