IRELAND’S largest household waste management company has urged householders across Dublin to be extra vigilant about their recycling over the Christmas period.

According to Greyhound, the Irish now officially lead the field as the biggest Christmas spenders in Europe.

The knock-on result for households will be extra waste generation in the form of food, food and drink packaging, present packaging, decorations and cards.

“This is a good time of year to remind people about the importance of using their bins to maximum advantage which has the positive affect of lessening the cost of waste management to customers while being beneficial to the environment,

? said Michael Buckley, CEO of Greyhound.

“Levels of packaging can increase by up to 30 per cent over Christmas time and it is important that people know how to best recycle over the holiday season, and all year round.

“At Greyhound we currently recycle and recover in excess of 90 per cent of the waste we collect and we are leading the advancement of waste derived fuels as a method to replace fossil fuels in the production of heat and power.

“This in turn is reducing dependency on landfill. What this means for customers is that by using their bins smartly the result will be a smaller waste collection bill for customers on pay per weight rates, in addition to diverting what would have been a liability into an environmentally sustainable resource.

Mr Buckley added that it was important for people to make themselves aware of their nearest Christmas tree drop-off point, where local authorities will accept Christmas trees free of charge – as long as you remember to take all decorations off.

Details of these can be found on local authority websites.

“And one trip to your local bottle bank or civic amenity centre should rid you of all those used wine bottles that tend to build up at this time of year,

? Mr Buckley added.
